For most residential driveways, 3/4″ Minus is the go-to surface material — it compacts well and stays put. If you’re building a base layer first, start with 4″ Residential Gravel or 2″ MDOT Type A underneath. For heavy equipment access roads or serious road construction, MDOT Type D gives you the sub-base strength you need.
